For the hillwalker in the UK the Scarpa Manta has defined the winter 4-season boot for many years, and it remains the definition of the category. The boot has a stitch-free leather upper and so it won’t leak or fall apart easily as there is no stitching to fail. But for extra durability you get a full rubber rand to ensure this boot can take many years of abuse without showing signs of wear and tear. As you do not get a waterproof lining inside, some care is needed to look after the thick leather upper to ensure it remains water-resistant, but this is easy to do. The outsole is a very good design with deep, well-spaced lugs that are ideal for crunching through snow. On the foot the Scarpa Manta gives a close and comfortable fit while in action it provides a good all-round performance. Mountaineers may however prefer the more precise feel of some other boots, while walkers may choose boots that give a slightly smoother rolling action. But the foot does sit close to the ground in the Manta and as an all-rounder for UK winter hill and mountain walking it remains hard to beat.

The Manta is the definition of an all-round winter hill and mountain walking boot for British mountains, but it can cope with easier glacier travel and easier mountaineering too. It deservedly won Trail’s ‘Best in Test’ accolade.
