Scarpa Kailash GTX (2012)

This is a snug-fitting boot, best-suited to those with a narrower foot. The narrow fit does mean a great heel hold and the feet sit securely in place within the boot – but it doesn’t allow for quite as much padding as some others on test, which means these take a little more breaking-in. The reduced padding means they work well in warmer conditions, however, and should help them to last longer, as there’s no padding to wear down. The waterproofing and breathability are good, with a Gore-Tex membrane providing weather-sealing. There is suede leather coverage over most of the boot, so proofing is further boosted in wet conditions. Grip is good on most terrain, and particularly on rock (even when wet), where these were outstanding. They use a stickier compound on the sole. On muddier terrain, the lug pattern isn’t the most aggressive, but the relatively wide spacing helps to shift mud away well enough.
