Merrell Waterpro Ganges 2011

The Merrell Waterpro Ganges’ modern styling hides a practical foundation of great features. Firstly the sole unit is a good aggressive Vibram design with deep lugs that are ideal for getting a grip on softer ground. There is an excellent degree of stiffness in there too, though, which makes these better than most here for walking over uneven terrain. The footbed is well-cushioned so these feel great on concrete too. The upper offers more protection to the foot than a basic three-strap design and it’s more stylish. But there is still three-point adjustment and the straps are padded for extra comfort. To help prevent smells from the build-up of bacteria, the sandal is also lined with Aegis Microbe Shield. There’s not a lot wrong with the Merrell Waterpro Ganges in practical terms, unless you also want an enclosed toe of course. The price is the real issue, as it is quite a step up from the others (although it is a better sandal as well).

The Merrell Waterpro Ganges is a great sandal for casual and practical trekking use, but with all that performance comes a higher price tag. It won Trail’ ‘Best in Test’ accolade.
