The Asolo Alpinist GTX as the name suggests is a boot that would be ideal for a mix of mountaineering, glacier travel and walking on snow-covered mountains. It has a synthetic and leather upper with a big rubber rand at the forefoot and heel for extra durability. The lacing extends further towards the toe than most boots so you can get a more precise feel for climbing. The outsole is an aggressive Vibram unit with deep lugs, a deep heel breast and a smooth ‘climbing zone’ under the toe. The rolling action is good for walking below the snowline too. The ankle cuff is lower than some and it’s also well-articulated so that it provides support without making walking difficult. The weight and price are great for this style of boot too, which all adds up to this being a great all-rounder for winter walking. But the extra stitching on the Asolo Alpinist GTX’s upper may ultimately be a weaker link in the design compared to others with fewer panels on the upper. The rubber rand does not extend fully around the boot, although again this won’t have a dramatic impact. Other boots have higher ankle cuffs, which are of benefit for mountaineering.

The Asolo Alpinist GTX is a superb winter boot if you prefer a slightly narrower profile and a lower ankle cuff.
