As the iconic brand enters its 50th year, it is both pushing the envelope... and returning to its roots.
The last 20 years have seen Lowe Alpine embark on a journey back to its roots. Now part of Equip UK, this iconic American brand is once again applying itself to pushing the boundaries of rucksack design. In its 50th year this has come impressively to bear with the Ascent range – a brand new range of backpacks designed in partnership with top alpinists to deliver performance under the most difficult conditions.
The Ascent Range is designed for climbing, mountaineering, alpinism and ski-touring. Aiming to deliver light, simple and functional performance, each comes loaded with top-end features such as the HeadLocker ice axe attachment system: a unique design wherein a moulded bar is passed through the eye of an axe and spring-tensioned. It’s fast and can be used with gloves.
The range is split into the Mountain Ascent, Alpine Ascent, Peak Ascent and Superlight Ascent, sharpening in size and weight the higher up the mountain you go. The pinnacle is the Superlight Ascent, a 30-litre minimalist backpack weighing a mere 580g, designed with the input of British climbing trailblazer Andy Cave, and features a removable frame that doubles as a lightweight sleeping mat, contoured shoulder straps, top tensioners that double as rope attachments and light but robust and water-repellant Tri-Shield fabric. It’s a range that caters for everyone, from the beginner to the elite alpinist, in a way it takes rucksacks to where they’ve never been before. And in the same way, it takes Lowe Alpine right back to its roots: creating mountaineering ‘sacks that break the mould and raise the bar.
